With a proficiency rate of 96.7%, Eagle Crest Charter Academy in Holland, a charter public school authorized by Central Michigan University (CMU) and managed by National Heritage Academies, earned the distinction of being the top performing public school "district" on the 2009 Michigan Educational
Assessment Program (MEAP) tests. Other charter public schools authorized by CMU that ranked among
the top 10 are:
"We are proud of the work these schools are doing to prepare students for success," said Jim Goenner, executive director of The Center for Charter Schools at CMU. "While the MEAP is certainly not the only indicator of measuring a student's academic performance, these results show the transformational impact that a high‐performing charter school can have on a child's education."
Canton Charter Academy, ranked the top performing school "district" in the state on the 2007 and 2008 MEAP, was the first public charter school to earn the top spot on the MEAP.
"Historically MEAP data shows charter schools, while serving a disproportionately high number of at‐risk students are making real progress in closing the achievement gap," said Goenner. "This year's MEAP results continue to offer promise that we are continuing to close this gap to help all students excel."
